How to Find a Reel You Watched on Instagram (2026)
You saw it once, it was perfect, and now it’s gone. Here is where to look, in the order that works.
You watched a reel with the exact recipe, workout or tip you needed, and you didn’t save it. Now it’s somewhere in the void. Good news: Instagram keeps a few trails, and you’re about to follow them.
Check four places in this order: Watch history, Likes, Saved, then Instagram search with the Reels tab. If someone sent you the reel, look in that chat too. Menu names can differ slightly by app version.
The quick answer: 4 places to look, in order
| Where to look | Finds | Misses |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Watch history | Reels you watched, by date or creator | May not include everything you scrolled past |
| 2. Likes | Reels you tapped the heart on | Anything you watched but didn’t like |
| 3. Saved | Reels you saved, in All posts or a collection | Anything you never saved, and anything deleted |
| 4. Search and Reels tab | Reels by song, creator or topic | Reels you can’t describe |
Two quick notes before you start. Instagram changes its menus often, so a label may be a little different on your phone. And if the creator deleted the reel or went private, it vanishes from every list below. That isn’t you doing it wrong.
Step 1: Check your Watch history
Where it is
- Open your profile and tap the menu (the three lines in the corner).
- Tap Your activity.
- Tap Watch history.
Once you’re in, you can sort by date or by creator. You can also filter to the past week, the past month or a date range. That is the fastest way to find a reel you saw yesterday on Instagram: set the filter to the past week and scroll. You can also remove items from the list if you want.
Instagram added this feature in late October 2025. TechCrunch covered the launch, and Instagram describes the controls on its help page.
What it covers and what it doesn’t
Here is the honest part. Watch history may not include everything. Sources disagree on how far back it goes, and on whether reels you only scrolled past show up. Instagram hasn’t given a clear limit, so don’t count on it as a full archive.
That matches what people report. One thread has a Reddit user in r/Instagram saying it simply “wasn’t in my watch history.” If instagram watch history is not showing the reel you want, move on to step 2. Don’t keep refreshing it.
Step 2: Check Likes, Saved and your recent searches
Likes
Go to Your activity, then Likes, and filter to Reels. This is how to find liked reels on Instagram without scrolling your whole feed. It only works if you tapped the heart, of course.
Saved
Open your profile, tap the menu, then Saved. Tap All posts, or open one of your collections. Look for a Reels filter if your app has one. If you have no filter, spot reels by the small play icon on the thumbnail.
Recent searches
Tap the search tab and look at your recent searches. If you searched for the creator, the song or the topic while watching, the trail may still be there. Tap it and switch to the Reels tab.
Step 3: Remember one detail? Search for it
You don’t need the whole reel. One detail is enough to try.
- The song. Search the lyric or song name, then open the Reels tab. Many reels use the same audio, so you can often land on the right one.
- The creator. Search their name or username and scroll their reels. This works well if you remember their face or style.
- Words from the caption or the screen. Search a phrase like “high protein pasta” or “shoulder mobility” and switch to the Reels tab.
- The person who sent it. If a friend sent it, open your chat with them. Reels shared in a DM stay in that conversation.
If you’re trying to find a reel you watched but didn’t save, this step is where most people succeed. It feels like guessing, but it works more often than you’d think.
What if it’s not in any list?
The creator deleted it or went private
Reels can disappear for reasons you can’t see. The creator may have deleted it, hidden it, or switched their account to private. When that happens, the reel drops out of Watch history, Likes and Saved, and Instagram doesn’t notify you. Users on Reddit say that half of their old saved videos are gone or privated, and they only find out when they go looking.
Ask the person who sent it, or search the audio
If someone shared it, ask them. They may still have it in their chat or saved. Otherwise, search the audio: tap any reel that uses the same song and look at the audio page, which lists other reels with the same sound.
As a last resort, you can ask Instagram for your data. Go to Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions, then Download your information. It’s slow, and we can’t promise it includes links to reels you watched, so use it only if nothing else works.
Why you can’t search your saved reels
This is the part that annoys people most. You may ask: can you search saved posts on Instagram? As of October 2026, we couldn’t confirm a working text search inside Saved. Instagram appears to be testing a search box for some people, and users say it doesn’t work well. So if you want to search your saved Instagram posts by keyword, you can’t count on it yet.
That is a real problem if you have thousands of saves. People describe scrolling for twenty minutes to find “that one transition tutorial.” They also say there’s no context on why they saved something, so every thumbnail is a mystery. If you want to find old saved reels without scrolling, the only built-in tool is collections.
Collections help, but only if you sort when you save
Collections are folders for your saves. They can only be browsed, not searched, so they work only if you put each reel in the right one at the moment you save it. That means a collection called “Recipes” with 400 reels in it is just a smaller pile.
If you use them, keep them narrow: “Pasta,” not “Food.” And add a note to yourself somewhere about why you saved it. Future you will not remember.
A way to make the next one findable
Everything above is free and built in. It’s also a bit like looking for a sock in a dark room. If you want the next reel to be easy to find, you need to save it somewhere you can search.
That is what we built Cruxr for. You share a reel to Cruxr from the Android share sheet, the web app or the Chrome extension. Cruxr writes a headline, a short summary, key points and tags. It also reads on-screen text in images and video frames. On the paid plans (Pro and Pro Max) it transcribes the speech too.
Later, you search by words in those notes. Type “sourdough starter” and the reel comes up, even if you forgot who made it. This is keyword search over the notes, so it finds the words that are actually in them. A daily digest notification, at a time you pick, reminds you what you saved. And the notes stay even if the original post is deleted. Cruxr keeps notes, not the video file.
What you should know before you try it:
- It doesn’t import your existing Instagram saves. It works on what you share from now on.
- There is no iOS app. iPhone users can paste links into the web app.
- It’s pre-launch. Cruxr is opening in rounds, so join the waitlist to get in.
- Price at launch: Free is $0, Pro is $1.99 a month (₹199) and Pro Max is $9 a month (₹999).

FAQ
How do I find a reel I watched yesterday on Instagram?
Open your profile, tap the menu (three lines), then Your activity, then Watch history. Filter to the past week or pick the date. If it isn’t there, check Likes, then your Saved posts, then search the song or creator name and switch to the Reels tab.
Can I search my saved posts on Instagram?
Not reliably. As of October 2026 we couldn’t confirm a working text search inside Saved. Instagram appears to be testing a search box for some people, and users say it doesn’t work well. Collections can only be browsed, not searched.
Why isn’t a reel I watched showing in my Watch history?
Watch history may not include everything. Reels you only scrolled past may not be listed, and if the creator deleted the reel or made their account private, it disappears from the list. Menu names can also differ by app version, so check you’re in Your activity.
How do I see only my saved reels, not photos?
Go to your profile, open the menu, tap Saved, then All posts. Look for a Reels filter if your app has one. If it doesn’t, open a collection you made for reels, or scroll and look for the play icon on each thumbnail.
Does Instagram tell me when a saved reel gets deleted?
No. A saved reel just stops showing up, or shows as unavailable. Instagram doesn’t send a notice, so you often find out when you go looking for it. That is why you should note what a reel was about when you save it.
How far back does Instagram Watch history go?
Instagram hasn’t published a clear limit, and reports vary. Treat it as a short-term memory aid, not an archive. If you need a reel for good, save it or write down what it said while you still can.
