YouTube Watch Later Too Long? How to Find Any Video

Search your history, use what Watch Later has, and sort the rest into playlists. Then stop the list from growing out of reach.

Watch Later started as “I’ll get to it this weekend”. Now it’s hundreds of videos, no clear order, and the one you need is somewhere near the bottom. You are not bad at this. The list was never built to be searched.

TL;DR

Try three things in order. First, search your watch history if you already watched the video. Second, open Watch Later and use the tools it has. Third, move the videos worth keeping into playlists by topic.

Quick answer: 3 ways to find a video you saved

Menu names vary by app version and platform.
MethodBest forLimit
Search watch historyA video you already watchedNeeds watch history on; cleared history is gone
Open Watch LaterA video you saved but haven’t watchedLimited sorting; hard to scan when it’s long
Playlists by topicVideos you want to keep findableTakes a few minutes to set up

Option 1: Search your watch history

This is the answer to “how to find a video I watched on YouTube”, including one you saw yesterday. Tap your profile photo, go to Settings, then Manage all history. You can also open the History page directly. YouTube documents this in its help page on managing your watch history.

From there, search your history by words you remember: part of the title, the channel, a topic. Or browse by date if you know roughly when you watched it. Shorts you watched show up the same way.

Two catches. It only works if watch history was turned on, and anything you deleted from history is gone for good. If you can’t find a video you watched on YouTube, one of those two is usually why.

Option 2: Open Watch Later and use what it does have

Go to the You tab, then Playlists (some versions call it Library), then Watch later. YouTube’s page on Watch Later covers the basics.

  • Add while watching (Android): tap More or Save, then Watch later.
  • Add a Short: More, then Save to playlist, then Watch later.
  • Add from a feed: tap More (⋮) next to the title, then Save to Watch later.
  • Remove: More next to the video, then Remove from Watch later.

Menu labels differ by app version and platform, so yours may read a little differently. Videos made for kids can’t be saved to Watch Later.

Look in the playlist menu for a “Remove watched videos” option. Many versions have it. Sorting options have changed over time and users say they are limited, so check what your version offers instead of counting on a particular one.

That is the honest weak spot. If you want to know how to find a video in YouTube Watch Later, the plain answer is often “scroll”. After a few hundred videos, that stops working.

Option 3: Move videos into playlists by topic

This is how to organize YouTube Watch Later so it stays useful. Treat Watch Later as an inbox, not a library. Create a few named playlists, such as “Recipes”, “Python tutorials” or “Talks”, and move videos you want to keep into them. YouTube explains how to create and manage playlists.

Do it in small batches. Ten minutes on Sunday beats a weekend-long cleanup you never start. A video in a playlist named for its topic is far easier to find than one buried in a flat list.

Why Watch Later gets messy

Reading Reddit, the pattern is familiar. One person in r/youtube said they add more videos than they watch. Others describe adding a video and finding it gone, in a thread with hundreds of upvotes. And even after the bug fix in August 2026, people still say the Watch Later screen is hard to use. Plenty of people also use Liked videos as a stand-in list, which makes both lists worse.

The 5,000 limit

YouTube says a playlist can display up to 5,000 videos. It’s unclear whether that applies to Watch Later specifically. Either way, a list you can’t scan stops being useful long before you reach a cap, so the YouTube Watch Later limit is rarely your real problem.

Videos going missing or “unavailable”

When a creator deletes a video or makes it private, it shows in your list as unavailable. You keep the placeholder but lose the video, and often the title too. If your YouTube Watch Later seems to have lost videos, this is the most common cause. Check History and your other playlists before you assume the worst.

The August 2026 Watch Later bug

If your YouTube Watch Later disappeared or isn’t showing videos, there was a real cause in August 2026: a bug hid saved videos. Reports say it was fixed. If videos are still missing, update the app, sign out and back in, and compare with the web version.

Trim it down without losing what matters

  1. Remove watched videos. Use the playlist option if your version has it. That clears the easy part.
  2. Keep a small “this week” playlist. Pick five to ten videos you will really watch. Park everything else in topic playlists.
  3. Write one line on why you saved it. “Fix for the leaky tap” beats a title you will not recognize in three months. Put it in a note or in the playlist description.

What about bulk delete? YouTube’s built-in options are limited: remove watched videos, or remove videos one by one. Browser extensions that bulk delete exist, but they act on your account, so use them at your own risk. We won’t recommend one.

For videos you’ll actually use: keep searchable notes

The deeper problem is that a saved video is just a title and a thumbnail. You remember what was said in the video, not what it was called. That’s the gap Cruxr is built for.

  • Save by sharing a link. Share a YouTube video or Short to Cruxr from the Android share sheet, the web app or the Chrome extension.
  • Get notes back. Cruxr writes a headline, summary, key points and tags, and reads on-screen text. On paid plans (Pro and Pro Max) it also transcribes the speech. Pro handles videos up to 60 minutes; Pro Max has no length cap.
  • Search by words. It’s keyword search over those notes. Type “descale a kettle” and you find the video by what was said in it.
  • A daily digest. A notification at a time you pick reminds you what you saved.
  • Notes outlive the video. If the video goes private or is deleted, your notes stay. The notes, not the video.

What it doesn’t do: Cruxr doesn’t read or import your existing Watch Later list. It’s for videos you share from now on. It isn’t a video player, so you still watch on YouTube. There’s no iOS app yet; iPhone users can paste links into the web app. Free is $0 and covers links and images but not video transcription. At launch, Pro is $1.99 a month (₹199) and Pro Max is $9 a month (₹999). Cruxr is pre-launch and opening in rounds, so join the waitlist. See how Cruxr saves YouTube videos for the details.

FAQ

How do I find a video I watched on YouTube yesterday?

Open your watch history: tap your profile photo, go to Settings, then Manage all history, or open the History page. Search by words from the title or channel, or scroll by date. This only works if watch history was on at the time. If you cleared it, that video is gone from the list.

Why did my Watch Later playlist lose videos?

Common reasons: the video was made private or deleted, so it shows as unavailable, or you removed it by accident. In August 2026 a bug also hid saved videos, and reports say it was later fixed. If videos are still missing, check History and your other playlists before assuming they are gone.

Is there a limit to Watch Later?

YouTube says a playlist can display up to 5,000 videos. YouTube’s help pages don’t say whether that exact figure applies to Watch Later, so treat it as a guide, not a promise. Long before that, the list is usually too big to browse.

Can I search inside my Watch Later playlist?

Not reliably. Some app versions and platforms may offer a way to search or sort a playlist, and these options have changed over time, so check yours. If yours has none, scroll the list, or use your watch history search for videos you already opened.

How do I delete everything from Watch Later at once?

YouTube’s built-in options are limited. Look for a “Remove watched videos” option in the playlist menu; otherwise you remove videos one at a time. Browser extensions that bulk delete exist, but they act on your account, so use them at your own risk.

How do I find a YouTube Short I watched?

Use the same watch history: Settings, then Manage all history, or the History page, and search by words from the Short’s caption or channel name. If you saved the Short to a playlist, look there as well. History only lists what you watched while it was turned on.
