YouTube Watch History Disappeared or Not Showing? Why, and What to Check
Four settings explain most “my history vanished” cases. Check them in this order before you give up on the video.
You open your history to find a video you watched last week and the list is empty, or the video simply isn’t there. Before you assume it’s lost, there are a few settings that quietly change what gets recorded.
Check, in order: whether history is paused, which Google account you’re signed in to, whether auto-delete is on, and whether you’re looking at the full list in My Activity. If none of those explain it, the entries were probably deleted and YouTube does not document a restore.
Quick checks
| Check | Where | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Is history paused? | My Activity, Controls tab | Videos watched while it’s off won’t show up |
| Right account? | Profile photo, account switcher | Each Google account has its own history |
| Auto-delete on? | My Activity, Manage history, Auto-delete | Older entries are removed on a schedule you chose |
| Looking in the right place? | My Activity, YouTube History | Search the full list instead of scrolling the app |
1. Is watch history paused?
YouTube says that videos you watch while history is turned off “won’t show up in your history”. On a computer, go to My Activity, open the Controls tab and see whether YouTube history is on or off. Signed out, the History page on youtube.com offers “Pause watch history”. The official steps are on YouTube’s page on managing your watch history.
Pausing does not erase what was already recorded. If your older videos are there but recent ones are not, a pause is the first thing to suspect. Turning it back on only records videos from that point forward.
2. Are you in the right account?
History belongs to a Google account. If you watched on a phone signed in to one account and now look on a laptop signed in to another, the list will look wrong. Check the profile photo at the top right and switch accounts. Videos watched while signed out are not attached to your account at all.
3. Did auto-delete remove it?
In My Activity, under Manage history, there is an “Auto-delete” option that removes activity older than a time range you pick. If you set it up once and forgot, older videos disappear on schedule. That looks exactly like history vanishing. Open the Auto-delete setting and see what range is chosen.
4. Search the full list in My Activity
The History page in the app is awkward for finding a specific video. On a computer, go to My Activity, sign in, choose YouTube History, then Manage history, and use the search icon. Type words from the title or the channel. This is often quicker than scrolling.
If you deleted entries
The “Delete” button in Manage history removes entries, and YouTube’s page notes it also removes your search history for the time range you select. That page describes deleting but gives no restore option, so treat deleted entries as gone.
Other places a video might still be
- Playlists and Watch Later. If you saved it, it may be in a list rather than history.
- Liked videos. Check this list if you liked it.
- Browser history. Search your browser history for “youtube.com/watch” and a word from the title.
- Messages and email. If someone sent you the link, search the chat for it.

Make the next video easy to find
History is a log of what you opened, not a library. It is hard to search by what was said in a video, and it can be paused, deleted or auto-cleared. If a video matters, keep a note of it somewhere you control.
That is what Cruxr is for. Share a YouTube link to Cruxr and it writes a headline, summary, key points and tags, so you can search by what the video was about. On paid plans (Pro and Pro Max) it also transcribes the speech. What it doesn’t do: it doesn’t import your existing YouTube history, so it only covers videos you share from now on, and it isn’t a video player. Cruxr is pre-launch and opening in rounds, so join the waitlist. See how Cruxr saves YouTube videos.
FAQ
Why is my YouTube watch history empty?
The usual causes are that watch history is paused, you are signed in to a different Google account than the one you watched with, or the entries were deleted by hand or by auto-delete. YouTube says videos you watch while history is off won’t show up in it.
Can I get deleted YouTube history back?
YouTube’s help page describes deleting history but does not describe a way to restore it, so assume deleted entries are gone. Look for the video in playlists, your browser history, or a message or email where you shared the link.
Does YouTube history show Shorts?
Shorts you watch while history is on are normally listed with your other watched videos. If one is missing, the same checks apply: pause setting, account, and auto-delete.
How do I search my YouTube watch history?
Open My Activity, choose YouTube History, then Manage history, and use the search icon. Search for words from the title or channel name.
Does pausing history delete what I already have?
No. Pausing stops new videos from being added. Entries recorded earlier stay until you delete them or auto-delete removes them.
